Book , Photo & Knitting/Crochet Clubs
Book Club continues to meet once a month. Our next meeting is Monday, January 24th, during which we will be discussing Sophie Kinsella’s Twenties Girl and Dan Jenkins’ Semi-Tough, both light fare and funny. New members are always welcome.
The Photo Club next meets Saturday, January 22nd at 2 p.m. in the library.
Knitting and Crochet Club will meet on Wednesday, January 19th at 7 p.m. in the library. We meet one or two times a month, and new members are welcome.
The Valatie Free Library is hosting a tea next Sunday, January 23rd
(snow date, January 30th), at the Valatie Senior Center on William
Street (the former Valatie Post Office) in Valatie. At the tea we will
be making Valentine cards for residents of Barnwell Health Facility. All
supplies will be provided. You can be as creative as you wish, or you
can easily imitate model cards. Adults, seniors, young adults, please
join us at 2:00 p.m.for hot tea, scrumptious desserts and the opportunity to brighten Valentine’s Day for some special Barnwell people. If you think you will be able to attend, please call the library at 758-9321 or email us at
valatielibrary@fairpoint.net. If you have not preregistered but find
that you can attend, just drop in. We need to make 264 cards, and we
need you.
“Crafty” Fun
Friday, February 4th
Kids, ages 8 and above, are invited to join us on Friday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the library to make a great Valentine craft. Decorate a wooden heart, suitable for hanging on your wall, with yarn and glitter. If there is time, make a Valentine card for someone special. Register at the library or call us at 758-9321 so that we have the supplies needed.
Basket Weaving
February 13th
Joyce Flower will again join us to conduct a basket weaving class. We will meet on Sunday, February 13th and possibly on Sunday, February 27th (depending on the size of the basket we decide to make) from 1 - 4 p.m. in a location to be determined. Basket choices are an 8 x 8 muffin basket (one session needed for construction), a tote and a market basket (both needing two sessions for completion). There will be a fee of 15 dollars to help cover cost of supplies. Preregistration is required so that sufficient supplies may be purchased. There will be an ornament making workshop in the library on Friday, November 12th at 7 p.m. Kids, ages 8 and older, are invited to attend to make ornaments/decorations suitable for the holidays. You may make 4 of the same design or 4 different designs. Join us for this free workshop and take home some great projects. NOTE: The date for our ORNAMENT MAKING WORKSHOP has changed from the date mentioned in our last newsletter to FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH AT 7 P.M.
The Valatie Free Library will be hosting a wine-making presentation by Dominick Lizzi, area wine-making consultant, at the Dorothy Ostrowski Senior Center on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
Mr. Lizzi will discuss home grape wine-making using traditional methods and modern insights. His aim is to introduce new wine makers to the art and to serve as a reminder to experienced wine makers. He will explain the process from choosing the grapes and making the wine to bottling. Holistic methodology and practical insights will be given. There will also be time for wine tasting of commercial wines. Mr. Lizzi will explain the composition of these wines.
Lizzi is an experienced life-long wine maker who with his wife, Mary Ann, has won awards for home wine-making production. He has experienced house wine-making in Europe and has had vineyard experiences.
Throughout the years he has taught a seminar on wine-making at Columbia Greene Community College and has made this presentation at various locations throughout the Capital District, including the East Greenbush Library.
To reach the Senior Center, turn on State Farm Road at Four Brothers. Continue on State Farm Road until you reach Opportunity or Independence Way. Turn right on either and drive to the end. The building on your right as you face the Town Park is the Center.

DOUG BARTELS, MASTER MAGICIAN
On Saturday, June 12th, Doug Bartels will present his always original magic show for kids of all ages. Come to see this amazing and award winning show at 11 a.m. at the Dorothy Ostrowski Senior Center off State Farm Road. Participate in the performance! Entertain your friends! Have a great time! Snacks will be served after the show. Call the library for more information. Directions to the Dorothy Ostrowski Senior Center: If you are driving south on Route 9, go around the circle and turn right on State Farm Road at 4 Brothers. Continue on State Farm Road until you reach either Independence or Opportunity Way. Turn right onto one of these roads and drive until you come to two buildings facing each other near the town park. The building on the right is the Senior Center. If you are driving north on Route 9, turn right on State Farm Road at 4 Brothers and follow the rest of the above directions.
VFL is having a book sale on Saturday, June 5th from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Visit us to see our selection of children’s and adult books and videos. Since we do have many books, we will accept only a limited number of items donated for this sale. Starting Wednesday, June 2nd, you may bring books or dvd’s in good condition to the library. Please do not bring textbooks or encyclopedias. Thank you.
We are planning a Mexican Cooking Class from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26th at the Dorothy Ostrowski Senior Center off State Farm Road. Call or visit the library to register. Melysa will be guiding us in making quesadillas and fried ice cream. If you have gone to Garcia’s in Albany, you know the ice cream. Delicious!!!!!!!
Thank you to all who contributed photos and attended the VFL Photo Exhibit on Sunday, March 14th. The pictures were so good that it was difficult to award the prizes; everyone could have been chosen. Congratulations to the winners! We’re looking forward to doing a similar event for kids in the summer. More information to follow on that.
